Position Overview

The Environmental Lead provides leadership and strategic direction for the site's environmental compliance programs, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, company policies, permit requirements, and environmental management systems. This position leads the Environmental team and partners with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and site leadership to integrate environmental stewardship into daily operations while supporting safe, reliable, and compliant manufacturing.

The Environmental Lead oversees environmental management systems, regulatory compliance, permitting support, audits, inspections, training, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role develops team capability, drives accountability, manages environmental compliance risks, and promotes environmental excellence through effective leadership, technical expertise, and collaboration across the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead, develop, coach, and evaluate Environmental team members while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Provide leadership for all site environmental compliance programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, permit requirements, and company standards.
• Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Technical, and other functional groups to integrate environmental compliance into daily manufacturing activities and operational decision-making.
• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of environmental management systems, policies, procedures, and compliance work processes.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen environmental performance, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
• Ensure environmental audits, inspections, investigations, corrective actions, and regulatory responses are effectively coordinated, documented, and completed.
• Develop and maintain environmental performance metrics, compliance measures, and reporting processes that support site objectives and regulatory compliance.
• Oversee environmental regulatory training programs and ensure employees receive timely and effective training in accordance with applicable regulations and company requirements.
• Monitor emerging environmental regulations and communicate regulatory changes and compliance requirements to site leadership and affected stakeholders.
• Support environmental permitting activities, regulatory reporting, agency inspections, and interactions with the EPA, TCEQ, consultants, trade organizations, and outside legal counsel.
• Develop and manage the Environmental department operating budget and monitor expenditures.

Key Interactions

• Internal: Environmental, Operations, Maintenance, Laboratory, Technical, Engineering, Resident Contractors, Site Leadership, and Global Environmental teams.
• External: EPA, TCEQ, regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, contractors, trade organizations, and outside legal counsel.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in both office and chemical manufacturing environments.
• Regular field presence is required to support inspections, audits, investigations, and environmental compliance activities.
• Frequent interaction with operating units, contractors, and manufacturing personnel.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely access operating units.
• Regular walking, climbing, and field observations are required during inspections, audits, and compliance activities.
• Occasional travel may be required to support regulatory meetings, training, conferences, or other business needs.

Education Requirements

• Bachelor degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline; OR 
• High School diploma or equivilant with fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible environmental compliance or manufacturing operations experience.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must possess a current, valid Texas driver’s license.
• Leadership experience supervising, coaching, or developing environmental professionals or cross-functional teams.
• Experience managing multi-media environmental compliance programs, including air, water, waste, and environmental management systems.
• Experience interacting with regulatory agencies, including inspections, audits, reporting, and compliance activities.
• Experience developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental management systems, policies, procedures, and compliance programs.
• Experience developing and delivering environmental compliance training.
• Experience managing departmental budgets, performance metrics, or continuous improvement initiatives.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build collaborative working relationships across multiple departments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with EPA and TCEQ permitting and regulatory processes.
• Experience leading environmental audits, investigations, and regulatory inspections.
• Experience supporting Management of Change (MOC), capital projects, and operational risk assessments.
• Professional certification such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), or similar environmental credential.
