Job purpose

Perform inspections and evaluations of fixed equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory, industry, and site standards. The incumbent is responsible for conducting inspections, documenting results, and recommending corrective actions for pressure vessels, piping, tanks, exchangers, and other fixed assets. This role ensures that inspection programs meet OSHA PSM, API, ASME, and other applicable requirements while supporting plant reliability and safety. The Mechanical Integrity Inspector works closely with the Mechanical Integrity Lead, Reliability, Maintenance, Turnaround, Projects, and Operations to ensure accurate inspection data is captured, analyzed, and acted upon to maintain safe and reliable operation of the plant.

 

The position will act in accordance with the Group’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, policies, guidelines and international standards, supported by an IT Technology platform and HSE standards.

 

Main tasks and responsibilities: 

Inspection & Compliance

  • Perform internal and external inspections of pressure vessels, piping systems, tanks, exchangers, and other fixed equipment.
  • Ensure inspections are completed in accordance with API, ASME, OSHA PSM, and site requirements.
  • Maintain PM program and provide inspection requirements for planned Turnarounds.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation of all inspection results.

Technical Evaluation & Analysis

  • Identify corrosion, wear, and other mechanical integrity concerns through visual inspection and NDE methods.
  • Support fitness-for-service evaluations and risk-based inspection planning.
  • Provide recommendations for repairs, replacements, or continued service to Projects and Turnaround groups.

Data Management & Reporting

  • Enter and maintain inspection data in Mechanical Integrity software systems.
  • Ensure inspection records are available and auditable for regulatory and corporate requirements.

Communicate inspection results and recommendations clearly to the Mechanical Integrity Lead and other stakeholders

Collaboration & Support

  • Work with Reliability, Operations, and Maintenance to prioritize corrective actions based on inspection findings.
  • Coordinate with contractors and third-party NDE providers for specialized inspections.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and other reliability investigations as needed.

Safety & Standards

  • Ensure all inspection activities are conducted in alignment with site HSE standards and safe work practices.
  • Stay current with industry codes, inspection methods, and best practices.

 

Key interactions

Internal: All site leadership and Maintenance & Reliability team members.

External: Vendors and outside service providers.

 

Notable Working Conditions: Combination of office and chemical plant field work.  Occasional travel required.

Education requirements: Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent technical training. API 510/570/653 certifications required, with additional API or NDE certifications considered an asset.

Language requirements: English

 

Background and Experience: 

  • 5+ years of inspection experience in a chemical, refining, or industrial plant environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of inspection methods, corrosion mechanisms, and fixed equipment degradation.
  • Hands-on experience with API inspection codes (510, 570, 653) and related standards (ASME, NBIC).
  • Proficiency in Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) methods and interpretation of results.
  • Experience maintaining inspection records in Mechanical Integrity or inspection data management systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA PSM requirements related to Mechanical Integrity.
  • Proven ability to identify equipment integrity risks and recommend corrective actions.

 

Competencies and skills: 

  • Strong technical knowledge of pressure vessels, piping systems, tanks, and exchangers.
  • Proficiency with API, ASME, NBIC, and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Skilled in visual inspection techniques and common NDE methods (UT, RT, PT, MT).
  • Ability to interpret inspection data and prepare clear, accurate reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to regulatory compliance.
  • Effective communication skills to interface with inspectors, engineers, and operations personnel.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and manage multiple inspection priorities.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and continuous improvement.
