Position Overview

Develops, coordinates, and delivers technical training for Production personnel to ensure employees possess the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to perform assigned work safely, reliably, and effectively.  Maintains a high level of technical competency within the assigned production area and serves as a subject matter expert for unit operations, equipment, and procedures.

The Unit Trainer partners with Production Leadership, Operational Training Coordinator, and other departments to identify competency needs, maintain employee qualification and progression programs, support process safety requirements, and promote standardized training practices. 

Main Tasks and Responsibilities 

• Leads process operator onboarding, qualification, and progression activities by developing and delivering technical training, coordinating OJT activities, and verifying employee competency through administering qualification and requalification exams.
• Conducts field observations, job performance reviews, and training effectiveness audits to verify employees understand and consistently apply safe operating practices, operating discipline, and site policies and procedures.
• Supports process safety competency by ensuring employees are trained and qualified on critical operating procedures, process safety requirements, and abnormal operating conditions.
• Coaches and mentors operators to reinforce safe work practices, procedural compliance, troubleshooting skills, and continuous improvement behaviors.
• Delivers technical training and facilitates classroom, field-based, and on-the-job learning activities for assigned production areas to support operator qualification and competency development.
• Partners with leadership to identify emerging training needs and supports the development of appropriate training solutions.
• Maintains training and qualification records and ensures assigned qualification programs remain current, accurate, and aligned with site requirements.
• Supports audit readiness by reviewing manuals and training documentation and participating in internal and external audit activities.
• Creates, assigns, and manages SharePoint workflows associated with annual document and training reviews.
• Performs task analyses and develops technical training materials, lesson plans, OJT guidelines, job aids, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and competency assessments to support qualification programs and verify employee proficiency.
• Participates in ongoing training and professional development to maintain technical and instructional competency.
• Maintains work-area knowledge and skills and provides qualified operational coverage, as needed.
• Serves as a subject matter expert for assigned production areas and provides technical operations information to Production, Technical, and other applicable personnel.
• Evaluates training effectiveness through periodic reviews, identifies process training and competency gaps, and implements continuous improvement opportunities to enhance qualification programs, training methods, and workforce capability.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Interactions

• Internal: Unit Work Group Leads, Unit Production Supervisor, Unit Production Engineer, Training Coordinator, HSE, Maintenance, Technical Services, Laboratory, and Human Resources.
• External: Third-party contractors and vendors, as appropriate.

Working Conditions

• Works in a chemical manufacturing plant environment requiring compliance with established Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) procedures and the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Regularly works in operating areas and may be exposed to industrial conditions, including noise, temperature variations, chemicals, and process equipment hazards.
• Requires prolonged standing and walking, including navigating production areas and performing field observations and training activities.
• May be required to work extended hours or adjust work schedules to support training activities, operational needs, turnarounds, startups, shutdowns, or other site priorities.
• Must be able to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

Education Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive production experience in chemical, petrochemical, refining, or continuous process manufacturing.
• Current or previous qualifications as an experienced operator in the assigned production area.
• Demonstrated experience delivering technical training, coaching, mentoring, on-the-job training (OJT), or operator qualification activities.
• Demonstrated knowledge of chemical manufacturing equipment, operating procedures, and safe work practices.
• Knowledge of applicable HSE procedures, process safety requirements, operating discipline principles, and regulatory standards.
• Valid Texas Driver's License
